Alexandru Ioan Cuza University

Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi (UAIC) is the first modern Romanian university and was officially inaugurated on the 26th of October 1860. Being the first higher education institution established in Romania, it has been carrying on a tradition of excellence and innovation in the fields of education and research. Nowadays, it ranks among the first in the country in terms of research, education and institutional transparency.

With over 25.000 students (~10% of foreign nationality) and about 750 academic staff, UAIC enjoys high prestige at national and international level. It cooperates with about 300 universities world-wide and is affiliated to important university networks and associations: Coimbra Group, Utrecht Network, European Association of Universities, Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie, International Association of Universities, Réseau des Universités Francophones, Balkan Universities Network. These partnerships have offered us the opportunity to experience changes, to have student and teacher mobilities and joint academic programmes that have brought diversity and dynamism to academic life and an added value to the quality of teaching and research.

With the adoption of the Bologna process, UAIC became the first student-centred university in Romania. Through a rich offer of complementary studies at all faculties, the university allows students the freedom to shape their own way by acquiring academic knowledge in areas of their choice.

Research at our university is top level. For several years in a row, UAIC was placed first in the national research ranking. Our teachers are involved in over 400 national and international research projects, with the logistic support of 24 research centres. Striving for excellence, the university takes unique initiatives to stimulate research quality, to encourage dynamic and creative education and to attract the best students to academic life.

The vision of UAIC is to enhance learning and universal knowledge, to transmit the knowledge heritage to future generations, to cultivate the mind in the spirit of independent thinking, respect for human excellence and capacity endowment to practice a role in society, to comply with current national legislation and EU policies on research and education.

UAIC is among the first 50 out of 4000 European universities participating in the Erasmus programme:
